Spiritual companionship is a relationship in which a companion allows, through deep listening, the spiritual story of the other to unfurl. Through this relationship, the person seeking companionship is empowered to explore a deeper relationship with God, Allah, Tao, The Universe, or however you may refer to the Ground of All Being. – Spiritual Directors International
Spiritual companioning is not therapy. In therapy, a person explores problems he or she is experiencing and aims to find solutions to them. In spiritual companioning, a person takes a look at where Spirit is moving in their life as well as at their responses to that movement.
People benefit from having a spiritual companion whether their life’s path is smooth, mysterious, or full of obstacles. Some seek a deeper experience of the holy in their ordinary everyday lives, and others seek companionship as they face a life-changing diagnosis or death. In spiritual companioning, I seek to meet people where they are but not leave them there.
